With a dark ruby core and a deep magenta rim, the nose on 2018 Syrah erupts with classic tones of black pepper, cured meat, sweet and juicy red and black fruit, dusty red cherry, black raspberry and blackberry reduction. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is delineated with bright and dusty flavors of plum reduction and blackberry jus before offering up a spicy and floral essence across the mid-palate with lifting tannins that support the frame. The wine concludes with a long, lingering and subtly spiced finish, leaving lasting tones of dusty blackberry, roasted espresso bean, baking spices and fresh cracked black pepper.
A graceful Syrah that entices with the floral- and spice-laced nose, which offers a fragrant range accenting the palate's flavors of ripe black raspberry and black plum, Earl Grey tea leaf and tar-tinged mineral. Long and well-knit, with sculpted, lightly chalky tannins firming the finish.
The complex nose offers a brooding compote of dark berry fruit, black olives, perfume and spice. The blackberries, youngberries, brambles and violets of the nose follow through onto a full, round palate with intense notes of allspice, liquorice and black pepper. The mid-palate is concentrated and focused, yet austere and lithe at the same time. The wine is savoury, almost Rhône-like in style with integrated acidity and firm, fine-grained tannins to balance, offering structure and great ageability. The spicy finish endures with hints of cloves, nutmeg and cardamom and subtle garrigue nuances.
The South Africans consciously call their expression of the Rhone Valley, Syrah and not Shiraz, confidently fashioning an old world style in the austere reaches of Swartland. Boekenhoutskloof's master winemaker Marc Kent knows the region almost as well as he knows Syrah, bringing together handpicked grapes from select parcels of the Swartland farms of Porseleinberg (90%) and Goldmine. Kent has diligently aged the wine for 18 months to land a Syrah style, steeped in floral and peppery aromas alongside generous red fruit.
