South Africa has mastered the new world Merlot style on its Cape Coast where Stellenbosch and Paarl are revered as prime Merlot regions. MAN Family which nestles in the windswept region of Paarl makes a sterling Merlot which typifies the South African style, elevating it with depth of flavour and earthy touches. The wine is called Jan Fiskaal in recognition of a small indigenous bird with a sharp cry and fierce reputation that is frequently sighted, gliding over Paarl's vineyards. The wine itself is relatively more mellow than the busy vineyard bird. Made from grapes grow on the estate's Paarl vineyards rich in Malmsebury shale, the wine is interestingly only part matured in American oak. A small batch is matured in metal tanks by Man Family's Chief winemaker Riaan Möller with the intent of fashioning a soft and approachable style. The Cape Coast merlot charms the palate with generous tones of plum cherry and spice laced with earthy notes and silky tannins on the finish.
