Vina Franchetti has an undeniably Burgundian streak thanks to a a very graceful and smokey Passorosso, produced from local hero grape Nerello Mascalese. Now it might merely be a coincidence that Nerello Mascalese is regarded as Italy's answer to Pinot Noir but Andrea Franchetti nonetheless treats this grape with similar respect and coaxes it to brilliance. This diligent winemaker is in fact credited with fleshing out Etna's red wine style nearly 20 years ago when the region was churning out reds only fit for bulk wine bottling. This elegant volcanic red is Franchetti's achievement not just for Passopisciaro but Etna itself. The 100 year old vines are cultivated at an elevation of 1000m on the north slope, yielding concentrated fruit befitting a top shelf Etna Rosso DOC. Barrel aged for 18 months, this most elegant Italian volcanic beams with the red fruit, minerality and distinct character.
