Louis Barruol has solved the problem of tracking which bottling a non-vintage wine comes from by adding a bottling date to the front label of his NV Vin de France Little James Basket Press. This particular sample was bottled in 2019. Greche-based and aged in tank, it offers up scents of maraschino cherries, almond skin and dried herbs. Medium-bodied, succulent and juicy, it finishes well, with just enough silky tannin to give it substance. Drink it over the next couple of years.
Lively, featuring pepper and garrigue notes amid the cherry and red currant coulis flavors, with lightly dusty tannins on the finish. Grenache, bottled from a solerasystem in 2017. Drink now. 10,000 cases made.
Château de Saint Cosme is widely revered as a most traditional Rhone Valley estate but its creative streak shines through with this unconventional non vintage red. This is perhaps their only red wine to bear aVin de France designation due to its unique Solera production method. The wine is made from blending Grenache from multiple vintages in concrete tanks starting with the 1999 vintage. With the 2021 bottling, head winemaker Louis Barruol added Pinot Noir to the blend. The result was an exciting one, turning the heads of wine critics and enthusiasts with its generously fruity palate and delicious length.
