The 2016 Et Rosso Trimarchisa shows brighter immediate aromatic intensity compared to the same wine from the 2015 vintage that I tasted at the same time. However, this vintage shows less intensity and length in terms of mouthfeel, in my opinion. The quality of fruit appears more streamlined in this vintage, although you get a good glimpse of that Et complexity with berry, spice and mineral tones.
A graceful red, with a lovely vibrancy to the finely-knit notes of chopped black cherry, dried fig, star anise and tea rosé. A hint of stony mineral and supple tannins define the lingering finish.
Multifaceted soils helped the wine to full maturity, giving it a restrained ripeness mixed with minerality. The aromas and flavors blend blackberry, black cherry with those mineral notes and a delicate hint of wood. The complex, elegant mouthfeel balances with firm tannins and lively acidity to create a very long finish and a wine that has great potential for longevity.
When a wine is made not just with skill and mastery of the terroir but also the bravery of working under the watch of a fierce volcano, then appreciating this sublime Sicilian red feels all the more memorable. Tornatore has a history of over 160 years and vineyards spread out across Mount Etna's best sites at high altitudes, rooted in mineral rich soils fed by volcanic lava and nurtured by Mediterranean warmth and cool sea breeze. This Nerello Mascalese led blend radiates with this terroir and rich ripe fruit cradled by 18 months of barrel ageing. Produced from grapes farmed from prized parcels near Castiglione di Sicilia, the Trimarchisa is a wine poised to be savoured on special occasions or even aged further to realise its evolving greatness.
