Chateau Calon Segur
Bordeaux, France
Château Calon-Ségur is based in the Bordeaux appellation of Saint-Estèphe in the Medoc and is a sought after Third Growth Chateau. The origins of Calon-Ségur’s name lie in the proximity of the Gironde River estuary. Calon is the name of the small boats, or skiffs, once used to transport timber along the estuary.
Calon-Ségur, which is classified as a third growth under the 1855 Classification, is in the most northerly Médoc appellation of Saint-Estèphe. A heart remains on the wine’s label to this day. The Chateau’s 74 hectares of vineyard planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Cabernet Franc as well. The wines can be austere when young, but their staying-power is beyond doubt.
