The IL Poggione 2022 Rosso di Montalcino has a point of cherry liqueur or Luxardo syrup that gives the bouquet a happy lift in an otherwise very hot and challenging vintage. You do get plenty of soft and ripe fruit over a simple, easy-drinking mouthfeel.
Tenuta Il Poggione has been family owned for five generations and the Montalcino house's traditional approach shines brightly on the palate of its relatively young red that is already ageing well and is rated 90 points by Robert Parker. Il Poggione Rosso di Montalcino is a more accessible version of the Brunello and yet this wine balances a fruit forward style with structure and tannic potential for further ageing. Head winemaker Alessandro Bindocci gives the wine extended time in barrel to further soften the tannins to give the wine a further dimension of complexity and make the wine immediately drinkable. Tenuta Il Poggione is in fact one of three original makers of Brunello di Montalcino and is retains its stellar form with this right of passage to the great Sangiovese DOCG.
